The concept of ambivalence refers principally to antonymic and multidi-mensional processes; consequently, it seems to be a particularly suitable interpretative key tool in detecting significant social and epochal changes.

The concept was first developed in the works of G. Simmel. According to Simmel, social relations are always characterized by ambivalent features, and social phenomena are in continuous evolution through a variety of conflicting forces addressed to social change.
