The essay outlines the efficiency and the operational readiness of the Royal Italian Air Force at the eve of the Second World War. After a brief description of the European political and military situation in the second half of the Thirties, the essay, through the analysis of four main topics – personnel, matériel, doctrine and operational planning –, will show the high degree of unpreparedness of the Italian air force at the beginning of the Mediterranean war.
